Who knew jumping through all of these time zones and daylight savings time changes would wear a person out? (Shane's snoring and Annie's cough is not helping either ...) The changes are also killing our sinuses.
Well, here it is ...
Did you know that there was a canyon in Texas? Me either.
The Palo Duro Canyon State Park opened on July 4, 1934, and contains 29,182 acres of the scenic, northern most portion of the Palo Duro Canyon.
The Canyon is 120 miles long, as much as 20 miles wide, and has a maximum depth of more than 800 feet. Its elevation at the rim is 3,500 feet above sea level.
It is often claimed that Palo Duro Canyon is the second largest canyon in the United States. The largest, the Grand Canyon, is 277 miles long, 18 miles wide, and 6,000 ft. deep.
Palo Duro Canyon was formed by water erosion from the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River. The water deepens the canyon by moving sediment downstream. Wind and water erosion gradually widen the canyon.
We spent about three or four hours just driving through and it would have taken even longer if I had charged my camera battery the night before. My family stopped getting out of the van after the first few times I yelled for Shane to pull over. In all, I took about 192 pictures of the Palo Duro Canyon.
You will have to suffer through the pictures I like the most. There are several. The first few will be of what we saw when we first arrived. It was amazing, but then the sun came out later and it was even better.
I have a feeling that I am going to love the Painted Desert and the Grand Canyon.
This is called Lighthouse Rock ...
We saw this cave and pulled over to explore it ..
Shane became nervous when I started to climb all over the rocks. Apparently he feels that I lack a certain ability to stay upright. LOL! He said he was getting flash backs to our first meeting; I fell down a pile of shale and have a scar on my knee.
We went back to the hotel and rested before we went to the coolest place for dinner. The BIG Texan!!!
The kids got hats and souvenir boots.
Who does not love drinking from a boot?
I will write more later.
